Blue Marsh
Hello and welome to My View for Wednesday, July 22, 2009.
Hello Everyone,
I hope you are having a nice week.
Today’s image is one taken of the marsh area on the other side of the footbridge near the pier on Jekyll Island. I had been out shooting after the Jekyll Island workshop was over. I made my way back across the footbridge after the sun had set. There was still just a bit of ambient light in the sky and the lights had come up on the pier, and the surrounding area.
I was “playing” with moving my camera to capture an abstract view of the marsh. It is a long exposure, so I made very small movements with the camera, stopping for a second or three between movements.
As I was searching for something to post this week, I came across this image again. Not only do I like the total abstraction, but it reflected my mood this week as I had to say good-bye to a dear companion.
As always, your comments and critiques are most welcome. They make me a better photographer, aid my growth as a person and offer me new experiences.

One reason I like this, other than the wonderful mood of the overall shot, is that blue is my favorite color and I was drawn into this image immediately. I also remember this area and from memory, I can still visualize the grasses and distant wooded areas, as well as, what could be water. I love abstracts, not only from an esthetic point of view, but also, of the amount of time I can spend looking around the image to see what I can see. The viewer can also concoct their own image.
Very nice.

Your photo carries the message of mood. I find myself looking from left to right, then following the dark lines to the top, and trying to discern the skyline left across the lighter top of the photo and on down to repeat the circle of motion again. I keep looking and feeling. I the journey you’ve taken me on.
I know if I had been fortunate enough to have had the vision and sense of adventure to take this photo, my photo would be reflecting moods experienced at completion of intensive workshops, while I am somewhat overwhelmed with all the new information, still unclear in a mind, wanting desperately to see and understand the reality.
I always like hearing the thoughts and feelings behind why someone takes a photo. Thanks for sharing how this photo reflects your mood at having to say good-bye to Sony. I’m touched.
Posting this photo has encouraged me to play with moving my camera.
I’m very attracted to your photo. Great range of blues.
Thanks.

Marti, I do love this image. The blurring technique you used – very long shutter speed and stopping movement every so often – works very well. Your subject to begin with was very simple, which helped in making this abstract. Thanks for sharing how this image helps you in your feelings about Sony’s passing, too.
Love & Hugs,
Flo

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I’m glad that the mood comes through with the image. Abstracts can be such fun and one can make abstracts anywhere at anytime.

Marti, what a wonderful image. I just spent two days in training and my brain is so tired. I just sat and looked at this for a while. It is very peaceful.
Thanks for telling how you did it, I am always so intriqued by how you shoot images.

It’s fascinating to me how your approach — with this scene — adds such depth to the left, energy to the right, and another tie between the mirror/reflection above and below. All emphasized without distraction through the (rich) monochromatic palette. Beautiful.
But I am so sorry to read that you’ve suffered yet another loss. :~(
My heart goes out to you.

Hi Becky and April,
Thanks for stopping by. Becky, I’m glad you find this peaceful — I do, too. April thanks for your comments and your condolences. I miss them both.
April, I’ll see you Saturday evening on beautiful Whidbey Island. I’m looking forward to it!!!

Marti I truly love this photo; it gives me such a feeling of peace. If I saw it hanging in a store I would definitely go in and look at, and perhaps even buy it even though I don’t have enough wall space for the art I already own, and I’m about to get more (depending on how things work out with my siblings) from my parents’ estate. I love the depth of the photo, the transition of the gorgeous blues, and the lines and curves; they meld perfectly. I appreciate your sharing your technique, also, as it gives me new ideas of things to try.

Well this is really painting with light in the best sense of the word. I too have a strong affinity with blue, so of course this picture found all positive receptacles. Beautiful, peaceful and inviting, and so it became my screen background – thanks for making it availabable in large size!
